Tallipiha’s history

More than a century ago, the Stable Yards were a bustling part of the Finlayson factory community, which played a pivotal role in shaping the city of Tampere as Finland’s main industrial town. Constructed between 1839 and 1890, this charming area was home to the horses of factory owner Wilhelm von Nottbeck, along with the dedicated staff who cared for them. Located just a couple of dozen meters from his home palace, the estate featured a stable, carriage shed, and homes for the stable master, stable man, driver, and watchman.

The buildings were painted in vibrant colors, showcasing beautiful wood carvings that combined folk elements with the international architectural styles of the late 19th century. Cobblestone paths wound through the yard, creating a picturesque setting that continues to capture the charm of Tampere’s rich industrial heritage.

After the Nottbeck era, the houses were home to Finlayson factory workers, with the factory’s horses still residing in the stable. In 1995, the city of Tampere launched a restoration project to transform the area into a family-friendly destination. The goal was to restore the old facades, interiors, and structures to their original 1880s charm. Throughout the restoration, great care was taken to honor the traditional atmosphere that once defined life in the Stable Yards.
